On September 18 an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) SWAT team arrested a suspect believed to be behind the Phoenix freeway shootings that have plagued commuters since August 29.
UPDATE: The suspect has been named as 21-year-old Leslie Allen Merritt, according to local news station KPHO.
Breitbart News previously reported there were 11 confirmed freeway shootings between August 29 and September 10.
At 6:52 pm Pacific Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) tweeted: “BREAKING: We got him! DPS SWAT team is in custody of the individual suspected of I-10 shootings. Apprehended moments ago.” Ducey also stressed that the investigation into the shootings is still active.
NBC News reports that no details on the suspect or the arrest were released, except for an acknowledgement that the arrest took place at a Walmart.
At approximately 9 p.m. on Friday night Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Colonel Frank Milstead held a brief press conference to say the suspect arrested for alleged involvement in the Phoenix freeway shootings owns a gun that “is forensically linked to the first four shootings.” Those began with two shootings on August 29.
Milstead said he could not say more at this time because the investigation is ongoing. He did indicate that the suspect is being questioned and search warrants are being carried out.
On September 11 police detained a 19-year-old for questions tied to the shootings but ordered his release a week later.
