Weekends aren’t the only days that see a heavy toll of violence in Chicago. On Tuesday of this week, for instance, 15 were shot in one day. One shooting befell a middle-aged woman who was just taking her trash cans to the curb.
Certainly we are used to seeing 10, 15, 20, or more Chicago residents being wounded each weekend, but occasionally—perhaps too much so—the weekdays can be just as dangerous in the Windy City. With 15 shot, this Tuesday was one of those dangerous ones.
Out of 16 shootings on September 15, only one was a fatality.
The death occurred at about 4:45 AM on Tuesday morning on the city’s strife-torn South Side. Officers discovered 48-year-old Albert Gonzalez dead in his home. Gonzalez had suffered a gunshot to the neck.
Among the 14 others wounded was a woman innocently taking out her garbage.
Just before 11PM, a 48-year-old woman was hit multiple times as she was taking out her garbage in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side. She is in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
This month has already set a dubious record with the most shootings in a single day in Chicago since 2003. On September 2, there were 25 shootings from which 11 people died. One killed was an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot by a family member who was handling a gun.
