On September 16 a Phoenix police officer was shot and “seriously injured” during an early morning traffic stop and Phoenix police are now conducting a “door-to-door search” for the suspect.
According to CNN, the incident occurred in central Phoenix around 2:45 a.m. Phoenix police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the officer was shot “more than once,” but the rounds hit his bulletproof vest. It should be noted that a bulletproof vest can reduce injury, but does not eliminate injury all together.
AZ Central reports that the officer was conducting a routine traffic stop when suspect opened fire. The suspect reportedly began shooting less than a minute into the stop and then “fled the area.” His vehicle, “a 1997 gold Ford Thunderbird, has [since] been found.” A “door-to-door search” is currently underway for the suspect, and citizens are being encouraged to avoid the area between Seventh and 16th streets, from Campbell to Indian School Road.
The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
News of the Phoenix officer being shot comes one day after a man allegedly attempted to shoot a Cincinnati officer, but failed because he forgot to load the gun.
