With news being made once again over disciplinary troubles in Rutgers University’s football program, Governor Chris Christie has taken time out from his pursuit of the White House to criticize the media for “overhyping” the problems.
Rutgers, the state’s flagship public university, has experienced a series of troubles over the past few months. In one case administrators just cut six players from the team over their alleged role in several home invasions and robberies. The team also recently suspended star receiver Leontee Carroo after he got involved in a fight after the Scarlet Knights lost to Washington State on Saturday. A report alleges that he slammed a woman onto concrete after the game.
But all the news coverage of the team’s troubles has Christie in a snit.
“The breathless media coverage of all this, and every time there’s a problem, it’s some indication of some problem, some deep-seated problem at Rutgers,” Christie said on Monday. “Man, you guys gotta find something else to do.”
Christie also stood behind the administration at Rutgers even as Coach Kyle Flood is also under investigation over the possibly illicit assistance to a player over eligibility questions.
“I have a president there,” Christie told the media. “I have a board of governors. If they need my help or they want my advice, they’ll call. And if I see something that I think is completely outrageous, I’ll call them, but they’re dealing with disciplinary problems with teenagers. This is not shocking. I’m a father of four. Having disciplinary problems with teenagers is the normal course on a college campus.”
The governor continued to scoff at the media saying that he has “a lot more important things to do than worry about” than disciplinary troubles at Rutgers.
