Republican presidential candidate and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal criticized fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump for his bankruptcies on Monday’s “America’s Newsroom” on the Fox News Channel.
Jindal said, “Donald Trump’s got a unique platform to run for president. He has declared bankruptcy more often than any major corporation in America in the last 30 years. Think about that. That is a unique to way to run for president of the United States, but maybe it makes sense. What is bankruptcy? Bankruptcy is having more debt than you can afford to pay back. Well, that describes Washington. They’re always on the verge of bankruptcy. They’re always spending more money than we have. Maybe sending the nation’s leading expert in bankruptcy is natural fit for Washington, DC That’s unique platform to try to run for president.”
Jindal was then asked if why he was going after Trump, and whether it was a change for attention to boost his poll numbers. He responded that his strategy is “working,” and “We’re moving up in the polls in Iowa. We’re focused on the early states. The reason I’ve done this, is we’ve got a unique opportunity, a once in a lifetime opportunity to get our country back, to implement conservative ideas. President Obama has run this country into the ground. But, here’s the challenge, do we rely on our conservative principles, or do we trust a man who believes in nothing but himself? Donald Trump’s not a conservative. He’s not a liberal. He’s a narcissist.”
Jindal continued to defend his tactic of going after Trump, pointing to his campaigning in Iowa, and stating, “we’re on the verge of losing the idea of America. This is a critically important election. And somebody has got to point out, others have attacked Donald Trump, have gone after him for giving money to Clinton, for having liberal policies. For — that is not why I’m going after Donald Trump. I’m going after him because the only thing he believes in is Donald Trump. He doesn’t believe in making America great again. He believes in making Donald Trump great. Somebody has got to say the emperor’s got no clothes. Somebody’s to say this is a time to go to conservative, proven ideas. I’m the only candidate that has reduced the size of government. Let’s go to a proven conservative leader, not an egomaniac, not an entertainer.”
Jindal concluded by answering how he explains Trump’s rise in the polls, saying, “One, I think the idea of Donald Trump’s great. Look, I like an outsider. I like somebody who’s politically incorrect. I like somebody who wants to fire the DC establishment. I agree with that. I think the DC establishment needs to go, including the Republicans, and the Democrats. The problem is the substance of Donald Trump is not the same as the idea of Donald Trump. Here’s a guy who says bankruptcy’s not ‘a failure, it’s a success.’ Well, only in DC does that make sense. He says, well, my companies went bankrupt. I didn’t go bankrupt. Martha, can you imagine him as president saying, ‘Well, the country went bankrupt, but I didn’t go bankrupt.'”
