The Family Research Council will present Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis the “Cost of Discipleship Award” for her refusal to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, in defiance of the Supreme Court Obergefell decision and a Federal Court order.
Davis, who was jailed for five days by Federal Judge David Bunning, will get the award during FRC’s tenth annual Values Voter Summit that runs September 25-27 in Washington D.C.
FRC Tony Perkins says:
After meeting with her last week, I can tell you that Kim Davis wasn’t looking for this fight, but she is not running from it either. What militant secularists are almost certainly afraid of is what is coming to pass: courage is breeding courage. When other people might have cowered in fear, Kim took a stand. And today, millions of Americans stand with her and for the religious freedom upon which our nation was founded.
This is the second year FRC has granted the award. Last year it was given to Marian Ibraheem, a Sudanense woman who became an international cause célèbre when she was jailed with her infant child and sentenced to death for refusing to convert to Islam. She gave birth to a second child in prison and was later released.
In announcing the award, Perkins said:
Far from the media’s portrayal, Kim isn’t trying to impose her views on anyone, she is simply asking that her orthodox religious views be accommodated.” Perkins also said that Davis’s example has caused state officials in Missouri to “protect their people from the same fate. While the Supreme Court redefined marriage, it did not redefine the First Amendment.
Perkins visited Davis while she was in jail. Davis’s attorney, Matthew Staver of the public interest law firm Liberty Counsel, will also attend the dinner.
The Values Voter Summit brings a few thousand conservative Christians to Washington D.C. each year to hear political and policy speakers, this year including Presidential aspirants Ben Carson, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. Bobby Jindall, former Sen. Rich Santorum, and Gov. Scott Walker.
