Political commentator and son of former President Ronald Reagan, Michael Reagan declared, “”Are you a Trump Republican, or are you a Reagan Republican? Because you cannot be both. You’ve got to be one or the other” on Wednesday’s broadcast of Newsmax TV’s “Newsmax Prime.”
Reagan “my father would be appalled by what’s going on with this campaign, and the name-calling is going on, and what Donald is saying all about those other players out there…tell us what you’re actually going to do if you become president of the United States of America.” And “to get personal like he is with Carly Fiorina, or anybody else, is just really appalling to me.”
Reagan added, “Are you a Trump Republican, or are you a Reagan Republican? Because you cannot be both. You’ve got to be one or the other.” He continued that he hopes Trump’s remarks about fellow candidate Carly Fiorina “hurts him with all the voters, not just women.”
He further said, “somebody has to step up and start attacking Trump — truly attacking Trump.” And that GOP presidential candidate Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal’s assessment of Trump is “probably right.”
Reagan also criticized some of Trump’s plans on illegal immigration, saying that making Mexico pay for a border wall, or deporting illegal immigrants and then re-importing “good ones” are “just not going to happen,” and that such positions make the Republican Party look poorly.
Reagan concluded by praising the records of some of the governors running for president, former Texas Governor Rick Perry, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who “have actually made their respective states great again.” He added that the lack of traction these candidates have, “concerns me about the base of the Republican Party.”
