On September 5, a couple with a 6-month-old baby in the car allegedly opened fire on Virginia Beach Police Officers and were killed when the officers returned fire.
The baby was not harmed.
According to the Washington Post, India Kager of College Park and Angelo Perry were being followed by police in unmarked cars because Perry was “a person of interest in a homicide,” and officers had learned that he “was planning to commit a violent crime.” Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera said of Perry, “We did know that he was armed, we knew that he was heavily armed. We did have credible information that he was going to commit a violent act in our city.”
The one thing the police didn’t know was that a 6-month-old baby was in the car.
When Kager and Perry pulled into a 7-Eleven, officers approached the car, and “Perry shot at them almost immediately.” He allegedly had a 9mm in this hand and another handgun at his feet. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding Kager and Perry. After moving in to check vitals on the couple, they discovered the baby.
Chief Cervera said “officers went to a nearby Wal-Mart to buy food and diapers for the baby until Child Protective Services could take care of him.”
In 2001, Perry “was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2001 for a malicious wounding case involving a firearm.” Cervera will not release the names of the officers because threats against them were made on September 7, and he says he wants to keep them as safe as possible.
