Last week U.S. District Judge Roslyn Silver okayed a settlement that “that resolves allegations [that] Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office [allegedly] retaliated against its critics, discriminated against Latinos during the sheriff’s now-defunct workplace raids and punished Latino jail inmates with limited English skills for speaking Spanish.”

According to Fox News Latino, Arpaio made “dozens” of raids “from 2008 through mid-2014” which netted more than 700 arrests of immigrants “charged with using fake or stolen IDs to get jobs.” The terms of the new settlement require “the sheriff’s office…to establish policies barring retaliation and rules that would govern any future workplace raids if Arpaio were to resume them.”

Another focus of the DOJ’s suit was to investigate accusations that Arpaio’s office allegedly launched into “county officials and judges who were at odds with him in political and legal disputes from 2007 until 2010.” Maricopa County paid “agreed to pay $8.7 million to settle lawsuits by people who said [Arpaio’s office] investigated [them] on trumped-up allegations.”

Throughout it all, Sheriff Arpaio maintained that he was “trying to root out corruption in county government.”

Although the DOJ’s racial profiling suit is now over, the agency is still going after Sheriff Joe by joining a profiling suit brought by others and contempt-of-court proceedings being overseen by Judge Murray Snow.
