Poll: More than 50 Percent of South Carolina GOP Voters Want a Non-Politician

South Carolina voters are overwhelmingly choosing non-politicians as their GOP favorites according to a recent poll, with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump still the frontrunner.

More than 50 percent of those surveyed in a recent Monmouth University poll released Tuesday have chosen a non-politician as a GOP pick, and 61 percent of the voters said they prefer someone with a new approach that comes from outside of Washington.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump came in with 30 percent support and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson came in with 15 percent.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush came in third with 9 percent of support. Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) were tied at fourth place with 6 percent.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) came in fifth with five percent and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was in sixth with four percent. Tied at three percent were former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie came in with 2 percent, and all other GOP candidates were at 1 percent or less.

“Trump leads along ideological lines as well, winning among those who described themselves very conservative (33 percent), somewhat conservative (31 percent) and moderate to liberal voters (23 percent),” reported Politico, “Trump also outpolled Carson 33 percent to 18 percent among evangelicals. He also won over more tea party and non-tea party voters, besting Carson and Bush, respectively.”

Trump had a favorability rating of 58 percent and only 28 percent of those surveyed found Trump unfavorable. However, Dr. Ben Carson had the highest favorable rating at 72 percent, with only 9 percent viewing Carson unfavorably.

The Monmouth University poll surveyed 453 likely GOP primary voters in South Carolina from August 20-23 and had plus or minus 4.6 percent margin of error.
