As Breitbart News reported, Donald Trump has announced that he will be holding a campaign event in Mobile, Alabama–the hometown of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). Thirty to forty thousand are expected to attend the event, which will be held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
When asked for comment, Sen. Sessions said in a statement:
I am very pleased Mr. Trump is coming to Alabama. The south is likely to play a central role in selecting the next GOP nominee. The winning candidate in 2016 will need to promote a trade and immigration platform that defends the legitimate interests of U.S. workers. Trump’s pro-worker plan has correctly put this issue at the forefront of the race.
Sen. Sessions, who serves as chairman of the Senate’s Immigration Subcommittee, has come to be regarded as the intellectual thought leader in the Republican Party on appealing to the blue-collar voters who have been abandoned by their political leaders. For instance, Sessions led the charge on opposing trade deals that harm American workers and immigration policies that prioritize the needs of corporatist donors above American citizens and legal immigrants already in the United States.
Prior to publishing his policy paper on immigration reform, Trump consulted with Sen. Sessions on the issue.
Polls support Sen. Sessions’ assertion that whomever is selected as the Republican nominee must support pro-American worker trade and immigration policies that will allow him to make inroads with blue-collar and middle class American voters. Indeed, this is certainly the case with Donald Trump, as polls show that the American electorate overwhelmingly supports Trump’s newly released immigration platform, as well as his emphasis on bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States and cracking down on the unfair trading practices of foreign competitors.
