George Zimmerman has painted a Confederate flag, which he is selling to raise money for Florida Gun Supply—the store that declared itself a “Muslim-free zone” in the wake of the Chattanooga attack.
Zimmerman became a household name after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense in February 2012. And according to the Chicago Tribune, he is placing himself back in the public eye with a raffle for his Confederate flag painting.
Across Zimmerman’s painting, the words “The 2nd Protects The 1st” are written. He said the words have two meanings: 1. The Second Amendment does protect the First Amendment, and 2. The Confederate Battle flag was the second flag he painted on the same piece of canvas.
He said he painted it when he heard that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was suing Florida Gun Supply owner Andrew Hallinan for barring Muslims from purchasing guns.
Zimmerman’s exact words:
The caption, “the 2nd protects the first” is a double entendre. The first flag I painted on this canvas was an American Flag, but decided to repaint over it with the Confederate Flag when I heard Andy was getting sued by CAIR. The 2nd flag I painted was the Battle Flag – which we need in America in order to protect the first.
Zimmerman is selling prints of the painting at $50 a piece. Each time someone buys a print, they are entered into “a raffle to win the original Confederate flag painting.” Zimmerman and Hallinan will split raffle proceeds to cover legal bills.
An American flag painting done by Zimmerman previously sold for $100,000 on Ebay.
