Edgar Mitchell, who rocketed into space as part of the Apollo 14 team to become the sixth man on the moon, claims that members of the U.S. Air Force saw UFOs flying over U.S. missile bases and the White Sands facility in New Mexico preparing to disarm the United States if a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia became imminent.
Mitchell grew up near the New Mexico sites, telling Mirror Online:
You don’t know the area like I do. White Sands was a testing ground for atomic weapons – and that’s what the extraterrestrials were interested in. They wanted to know about our military capabilities. My own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth.
Mitchell said the officers whom he spoke to mentioned frequent sightings during the Cold war, adding, “They told me UFOs were frequently seen overhead and often disabled their missiles. Other officers from bases on the Pacific coast told me their (test) missiles were frequently shot down by alien spacecraft.”
Nick Pope, former Ministry of Defense UFO researcher, demurred, telling Mirror Online:
Given that the Universe is around 14 billion years old, if we’re being visited, it’s unlikely we’re dealing with a civilization just a few hundred years ahead of us, so stories of aliens managing to disrupt a few of our weapons tests are far-fetched. Chances are they’d be millions of years ahead of us and could do anything they wanted to.
He also asserted of Mitchell:
Clearly, because of who he is, he’s had access to government, military and intelligence community personnel at the highest level, but because – quite understandably – he won’t name his sources, we can’t be certain these people were being straight with him, or indeed that they were privy to any classified information about UFOs.
In 2103, Mitchell spoke of his belief of aliens appearing on earth, stating:
After my space flight, I was contacted by descendants of the original Roswell observers, including the person who delivered the child-sized coffins to the Air Force to contain alien bodies. Another was one of the children of the deputy sheriff who was patrolling traffic around the site. There was also a military officer who was a friend of the families not involved in that particular operation, but who did share office space there. They all seemed credible with their stories that the bodies found were alien.
