Although be believes Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton would beat Donald Trump “like a drum,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) blasted Fox News for its queries of Trump during Thursday’s GOP presidential debate.
Interviewed on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Graham snapped, “This was more of an inquisition than it was a debate. It was a missed opportunity to talk about things that really mattered.” He lambasted debate moderators Bret Baier, Megyn Kelly, and Chris Wallace for their treatment of Trump, saying, “At the end of the day, ask the man a question that explains his position and his solutions rather than a ten-minute question that describes him as the biggest bastard on the planet.”
Graham bemoaned the lack of discussion of substantive issues, asserting, “Do you really understand our position on immigration after this debate?”
Graham did not uniformly support Trump, indirectly criticizing him for his position on illegal immigration. He stated, “Mexico is not making these people come here. They’re coming here because they want to. They live in hellholes and they want a better life.” He added, “The whole construct that they are sending their worst I reject,” in reference to Trump’s remarks claiming many illegal immigrants are criminals whose native countries impel them to leave.
Graham said bluntly, “Hillary Clinton would beat trump like a drum. I don’t think so; I know so.”
Last month, Graham destroyed his cell phone after Trump read the phone number aloud on national TV, then later appeared on ABC’s This Week and said, “I would ask the Republican Party why most major companies are firing Mr. Trump, and I don’t think we should hire him. I’m not taking on voters, I am taking on an idea that I think he’s appealing to the dark side of American politics. He is not offering solutions to hard, complicated problems. He is basically selling fear and prejudice.”
