On July 29, former Buckeye Police Chief Dan Saban announced he will run against Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the position of Maricopa County Sheriff in 2016.
Arpaio has been Sheriff of Maricopa County for over twenty-two and a half years and this will be the third time Saban has run against him.
According to AZ Central, Arpaio beat Saban in 2000, 2004, and 2008. “Saban ran as a Republican in 2004,” as a Democrat in 2008, and will run as a Republican again in 2016.
In the 2004 contest, “a 30-year-old allegation that Saban, then 17, had raped his adoptive mother” surfaced and took center stage. But “Saban claimed he was the victim” in the incident and members of his family supported his claim.
According to the AP, there are three candidates in addition to Arpaio and Saban who have currently filed papers for the 2016 race: John Rowan (D), Kenneth Wayne (I), and Roger Baldwin (R).
