MANCHESTER N.J. – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says that if members of the American military are trained to handle America’s weapons of war, they should be allowed to carry guns to defend themselves in military recruitment centers.
Christie was asked about the issue by a voter in New Hampshire today, asking about his opinion on the issue after five military members were shot and killed in Chattanooga.
“We should be,” Christie replied. “We trust these men and women with the most sophisticated lethal weapons that man has ever developed, and yet we’re not going to trust them with a handgun, a sidearm to defend themselves? That doesn’t seem to make sense to me.”
Christie recalled that President George H.W. Bush was the one who initially made the decision to restrict guns from members of the military from carrying weapons on military bases in the 1990s, but argued that the world had changed.
“That’s pre-9/11, pre-level of terrorist activity … the world has changed,” Christie said.
“Your wearing of a uniform of the American military now makes you a target,” he said. “We need to allow these men and women who defend us, to defend themselves, it seems to make common sense to me.”
