In the wake of the Lafayette theater attack, Democrat presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is calling for Congress to expand background checks to every sale so that all gun purchasers must pass the same check alleged gunman John Russell Houser passed for his handgun.

Gabby Giffords took the same approach on March 4, when she stood with gun control Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA-5th) and pushed for background checks to be expanded so that everyone would have to pass the same check her attacker–Jared Loughner–passed to acquire his handgun.

During a July 26 interview on Meet the Press, Sanders said, “We don’t have to argue with each other and yell at each other. We need a common sense solution.” He suggested that such a solution includes “universal instant background checks,” which means every purchaser–whether buying from a neighbor or a store–would be required to pass the same background check that attackers and alleged attackers like Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez (Chattanooga), Dylann Roof (Charleston), Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi (Garland), Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Andrew John Engeldinger (Minneapolis), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), Tennis Melvin Maynard (West Virginia), Wade Michael Page (Sikh Temple), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), and many others went through to get their guns.

In addition to going through the same check that so many with criminal intentions have passed, Sanders believes entire classes of guns should be banned as well. Sanders said, “I believe that we need to make sure that certain types of guns, used to kill people exclusively, not for hunting, they should not be sold in the United States of America.”

Sanders added, “And we have a huge loophole now with gun shows, that should be eliminated.”
