On Monday, the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP will rally to oppose legislation which protects “historical monuments and memorials.” The NCAAP opposes the legislation because it would include Civil War — and therefore, Confederate — monuments and memorials among those protected.
WFMY News reports that the legislation received final approval in the North Carolina House on July 21.
WFMY also reports that North Carolina NAACP president, Rev. William Barber, said their rally against the legislation will take place Monday, July 27, at 5 pm. He did not indicate whether “the protest will be at the Legislative Building or the old Capitol building, where Gov. Pat McCrory’s offices are located.”
The North Carolina NAACP is also urging Republican Gov. Pat McCrory to “halt the sale of license plates bearing the Confederate flag symbol.” McCrory has expressed willingness to do so, but reminded the group that he is required by law to get legislative approval for such an action.
Breitbart News previously reported that on July 7, the Memphis City Council voted to exhume the bodies of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife from a city park. They also decided to sell the city’s statue of Forrest “to anyone who wants it.” But these decisions have not been carried out because of a Tennessee law — the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act — which protects historical monuments and memorials in much the same way as the law being proposed in North Carolina.
On July 22, activists from the Commission on Religion and Racism (CRR) grew tired of waiting for approval to exhume the bodies and “dug up a patch of grass” next to Forrest’s grave. News Channel 3 reported that CRR member Isaac Richmond said, “We are going to bring the back hoe, the tractors and the men with the equipment to raise Bedford Forrest from the soil of Memphis.”
