Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee argued that the GOP should ignore people, most of whom are in “the donor class,” who are not willing to discuss abortion on Wednesday’s “America’s Newsroom” on the Fox News Channel.
Huckabee said the newest video is “sickening and I would like to think that maybe it’s time to talk something a little deeper than just defunding Planned Parenthood, which should have happened a long time ago, and that seems to be the mantra that a lot of people are saying. Martha, it’s time to go deeper than that. It’s time for this country to decide whether or not we believe that the willful destruction of a human body, a human life, and talking about the selling of parts of a baby as if we were trading parts for a Buick at an auto parts store, whether it’s time to decide that that is not civilized behavior. We need to really have the more serious, thoughtful discussion of ending this nightmare of abortion that’s taken 60 million unborn babies since 1973. This just reminds us, this is not about women’s health. This is about making money off the destruction of human babies.”
He added, “life begins at conception. The science on that is actually settled, Martha.” And “talking about the body parts, and not being so ‘crunchy.’ Think about — and the callousness with which she’s speaking about that indicates that her conscience has been utterly seared. She no longer has the capacity to see the right and the wrong of this kind of destruction. America’s nightmare of abortion needs to end. It’s not enough to just say, ‘Let’s not have so many.’ That nonsense we used to say in the culture about making it safe and rare, it’s neither safe nor rare, and it needs to stop.”
Huckabee concluded, “I would say thank God we’re talking about it. How can we expect our civilization to survive if we destroy the most innocent and vulnerable among us? How can we claim that we’re superior to nations that commit genocide if we commit infanticide? How can we claim that we are a civilized, advanced, educated people if we march 60 million babies to their destruction in what ought to be the safest place in the world for those babies, their mother’s womb. It’s time for us to put this out there and talk about it. I know a lot of Republican primary donors, it’s mostly the donor class, they don’t want to talk about it, ‘Stay away from these issues.’ I say no, let’s talk about it, in the same way that we once had to deal with slavery in this country, and Marta, we decided that one person cannot own another person. It’s immoral. And for one person to take the life of another innocent person, can we not conclude that that, too is immoral? That’s what we need to be discussing.”
