On July 20, Representative Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-4th) will introduce legislation to repeal “bans on military personnel carrying firearms on military recruitment facilities and bases.”
DesJarlais’ proposal is a direct response to the heinous July 16 attack on Marines in a military gun-free zone in Chattanooga.
According to The Tennessean, DesJarlais “is one of many to note the federal ban on weapons at military sites in the wake of the shooting.” This includes noting the sign on the recruitment center window indicating no guns were allowed.
DesJarlais’ legislation will be titled the “Enhancing Safety At Military Installations Act.” The bill’s preamble shows that it is designed “to safeguard military and civilian personnel on military bases and United States military recruitment facilities by repealing bans on military personnel carrying firearms.”
The Tennessean reports that language of bill is specifically crafted to focus on lifting the ban on “handguns.”
