In an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Joe Weisenthal that aired on Monday, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman weighed in on Donald Trump’s early popularity as the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination begins to shape.
Krugman attributed Trump’s success to being a “racist,” but said he anticipated Trump would fade and ultimately the GOP would nominate former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL).
“He’s a belligerent, loudmouth racist with not an ounce of compassion for less fortunate people,” Krugman said. “In other words, he’s exactly the kind of person the Republican base consists of and identifies with.”
“One after another, basically ludicrous candidates but loudmouthed, angry ludicrous candidates, shot to the top of the polls,” he added. “In the end they nominated Mitt Romney, who on substance was not that different the others. And probably the same thing will happen this time around with Jeb Bush playing that role.”
