A state prosecutor in Woburn, Massachusetts has announced that she is seeking to try convicted Boston Marathon bombing terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for his part in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer.
The younger Tsarnaev was convicted and given the death penalty in April for assisting his older brother, Tamerlan, in setting off several homemade bombs that killed six and maimed 260 others on April 15, 2013.
During the brothers’ attempt to flee a tightening dragnet, MIT officer Sean Collier was killed.
Now, two years after the officer’s death, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that she intends to try Tsarnaev for murder.
“When you come into Middlesex County and execute a police officer in the performance of his duties and assault other officers attempting to effect his capture, it is appropriate you should come back to Middlesex County to stand trial for that offense,” Ryan said in a statement.
Noting that Tsarnaev’s conviction would be appealed, the DA told the media that she was just beginning the process of trying the 21-year-old for the murder of officer Collier.
No dates or timeline has been set for the murder trial.
