In a surprise announcement this afternoon, Katherine Archuleta, the Director of the Office of Personnel and Management resigned suddenly after details were released regarding a massive hacking breach of over 21 million people.
Former Florida governor Jeb Bush called for her resignation in June, which was echoed by Speaker John Boehner last night.
“President Obama must take a strong stand against incompetence in his administration and instill new leadership at OPM so we can move forward in a fashion that begins to restore the confidence of the American people,” Boehner said in a statement
This morning, the Bush campaign released a video demanding that Archuleta be fired.
“22 million Americans affected, and OPM head blames China,” Bush said in the video which highlighted his speech. “No ma’am – you’re responsible, and you should have been fired.”
Speaking to reporters last night about the incident, Archuleta insisted that she would not resign as a result of the hacking scandal.
That changed suddenly this morning when she released her resignation statement.
During the White House press briefing this afternoon, Press Secretary Josh Earnest insisted that Archuleta resigned “of her own volition” and was not forced out.
