Nancy Pelosi: Federal Confederate Flag Ban ‘Is About Our Morals’

During a July 9 discussion on a spending bill, Democrat members of the House—led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12th Dist)—began pushing a vote to ban all “Confederate symbols from the Capitol.” This was a continuation of a push that began Tuesday, wherein Democrats sought to ban Confederate flags from all federal cemeteries.

On Thursday, Pelosi supported such bans as necessary, saying it “is about our morals.”

According to Politico, on Tuesday, Democrats not only pushed to ban the flag from federal cemeteries, but also “to stop the U.S. Park Service from doing business with enterprises that sell the flags.” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA-2nd Dist.) said, “This House now has an opportunity to add its voice to end the promotion of the cruel, racist legacy of the Confederacy.”

By Wednesday, southern Republicans were able to halt the Democrats’s push by simply making clear “they would vote against the Interior spending bill if that language was included.” These Republicans included “delegations from Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, and Virginia, among others.”

Rep. Steven Pallazzo (R-MS-4th) said in a statement: “Congress cannot simply rewrite history and strip the Confederate flag from existence. Members of Congress from New York and California cannot wipe away 150 years of Southern history with sleight-of-hand tactics. I will fight to ensure that this language is not included in any bill signed into law.”

Then came Thursday, and Pelosi began pushing votes to ban all “Confederate symbols from the Capitol.” Politico reports:

The votes failed on procedural grounds, and were referred to a House committee as a way of slowing the process. But the floor was filled with shouts and screams from both parties.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH-61st Dist.) interjected that it is time for “adults here in the Congress to actually sit down and have a conversation” about the flag in the days and weeks to come.

It should be noted that throughout the push for federal bans, not one Democrat mentioned the fact that the Confederacy—like slavery—was a Democrat institution in the South. And that any flag that flew in defense of either was likewise an emblem of Democrat power.
