An immigration advocacy group, The Coalition for Humane Immigrants Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), has planned to protest 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump outside of the Luxe Hotel in Brentwood on Friday, where he will be addressing a group of powerful Hollywood Republicans known as “Friends of Abe” (FOA).
CHIRLA will be using signs which read “Dump Mr. Trump” among other demeaning placards.
CHIRLA is largely composed of Mexican immigrants. Diana Colin, who heads the group’s “action fund,” told local Fox News affiliate in Los Angeles that she knows immigrants are welcome in L.A., “because we vote pro-immigrant candidates all the time and we’ve passed pro-immigration legislation in the State of California. So this is the wrong place for him to come and try to raise money.”
Trump has come under fire for recent comments on illegal immigration.
Among his comments were:
When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.
An FOA spokesperson told Fox that the group has never experienced a problem in the past with other political guests or commentators such as Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Rand Paul, Condoleezza Rice, Marco Rubio and Rush Limbaugh. The group was founded by Gary Sinise and includes members such as Jon Voight and Kelsey Grammer.
Trump has stood by his statements, and refuses to apologize for what he says is the hard truth. On Thursday, a group of California’s top Democratic lawmakers introduced a bill targeting Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) with a “divestment bill.”
