On July 9, Ruben Gallego (D-AZ-7th) introduced a bill banning Confederate flags from Virginia cemeteries.
ABC 15 reports Confederate flags currently fly at those cemeteries “on Memorial Day and on Confederate Memorial Day.” The flag appears at a total of “131 VA facilities around the country” on those two days.
Gallego said, “The Confederate flag is a symbol of hate and intolerance, and it will forever be associated with the injustices of slavery and Jim Crow.” He said it is “a painful reminder of a terrible time in our history when we treated human beings as less than.”
He co-sponsored the ban on Confederate flags with Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO-1st).
According to The Hill, Clay said:
This bloody relic of racial terrorism, which was embraced last month by Dylann Roof as he gunned down nine innocent souls in prayer at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, is the very same banner of hatred that has been proudly displayed by the Ku Klux Klan for 150 years.
The Ku Klux Klan was originally formed to protect Democrat hegemony in the post-Civil War South by frightening freed blacks out of voting Republican.
