That Fighting Spirit: Mitch McConnell Caves, Says Same-Sex Marriage Now ‘Law of the Land’

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says that Congress can’t do much now that the Supreme Court has legalized same-sex marriage.

In an interview with Kentucky television station WDRB, McConnell said that while he has “always felt that marriage is between one man and one woman,” the Supreme Court has ruled otherwise.

“That’s the law of the land,” he said.

McConnell admitted he is concerned about the “potential problems with regard to religious liberty” resulting from the Court’s decision, and the likely increase in litigation in this area.

“There are a number of institutions, which in practicing their religion, may run up against this,” he said, adding that legislators will see “if religious liberty needs to be enhanced by statute.”

McConnell added that Sen. Ted Cruz’s proposal of a constitutional amendment that would “protect the authority of state legislatures to define marriage as the union of one man and woman” would not pass the Senate.

The Majority Leader said his tenure thus far has been successful because he has found areas of agreement between Republicans and Democrats.

“Let’s try to focus on the things we do agree on,” McConnell said.
