On March 24, Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he would “respect” gun rights “appropriately” if voters gave him a pro-legislature. However, his past actions do not support this.
For instance, in 2011, Christie opposed a push for national reciprocity for concealed carry permits even though it was supported by New Jersey’s “entire Republican delegation in the House.”
According to North Jersey, by doing this, Christie sided with a concealed carry permit process that “makes it very difficult for anyone but law enforcement officers to carry weapons” for self-defense.
Moreover, this was the same position he took in 2009, when he said:
I believe that each state should have the right to make firearms laws as they see fit. I don’t believe it’s right for the federal government to get into the middle of this and decide firearms laws for the people of the state of New Jersey.
If that is Christie’s position, he needs to own it and quit tempting gun owners into believing they will have a pro-gun governor if they simply deliver a pro-gun legislature.
The Wall Street Journal pointed out that Christie previously made comments indicating his support for “strictly enforcing” New Jersey’s gun control laws.
