On June 26 President Obama eulogized Rev. Clementa Pinckney praising the frenzied efforts to banish the Confederate flag from public sight, saying, “By taking down that flag we express God’s grace.”
Obama also used the eulogy to call for more gun control laws and to praise Governor Nikki Haley (R) for taking his position on the Confederate flag and calling for its removal from the South Carolina Capitol grounds in the wake of the Charleston attack
According to CNN, Obama said:
Removing the flag from this state’s capital would not be an act of political correctness. It would not an insult to the valor of Confederate soldiers. It would simply be an acknowledgment that the cause for which they fought, the cause of slavery, was wrong.
And Fox6Now reports that Obama characterized the flag’s removal as an act of grace, saying, “by taking down that flag we express God’s grace.”
Obama called for more gun control, saying, “For too long we’ve been blind to the unique mayhem that gun violence inflicts on this nation.” The Washington Examiner reported that he referenced the heinous attacks on Sandy Hook Elementary and the Aurora movie theater, then said, “I’m convinced by acknowledging the pain and loss of others, even as we respect the traditions and the ways of life” that make up this country, “by making the moral choice to change, we express God’s grace.”
