House Speaker John Boehner approves of the decision to strip a subcommittee chairmanship from one of the House GOP dissenters who voted against the party’s “rule” earlier this month.
According to Politico, the Ohio Republican told the GOP caucus during a closed-door meeting Wednesday that he “supports” House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz’s (R-UT) move to oust Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) from his Government Operations subcommittee chairmanship.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting Wednesday morning, Boehner reiterated his support for the move.
“I think the chairman made the right decision. I made it clear to the members I supported that decision,” Boehner said, according to The Hill. “I’m sure the family conversation will continue.”
Thirty-four Republicans defied House leadership earlier this month in voting against the rule to dictate debate on the controversial effort to grant President Obama “fast-track” authority to negotiate trade deals. Meadows was one of the dissenters.
Reps. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Steve Pearce (R-NM), and Trent Franks (R-AZ), three other “no” votes, were also removed from the Republican Whip team last week.
There have been rumblings of additional punishments yet to come.
