After eBay, Walmart and Sears announced their intentions to institute a ban on the sale of Confederate Flag merchandise, the White House indicated that it supports those decisions.

During the White House press briefing today, Press Secretary Josh Earnest noted that the decisions made by the retailers to ban the sale of confederate flags were “consistent with the kind of position that the president has taken when it comes to the Confederate flag.”

Earnest added a caveat, however, noting that it was up to an individual business to make the decision.

“We welcome those decisions, but obviously those are decisions that should be made by individual businesses,” he said.

The Confederate Flag retail controversy has specific ties to the White House as former Obama press secretary Jay Carney now works in public affairs for Amazon, one of the many retailers that has sparked public outcry after it was revealed that Confederate flag sales have skyrocketed.

According to CNN, Amazon has not responded to repeated requests for comment.
