The Plattsburgh Press Republican is reporting that “[e]scaped killers Richard Matt and David Sweat were spotted late Monday night at Upper Titus Mountain above Studley Hill Road,” just south of the small upstate New York city of Malone.
According to the Press Republican:
Helicopters continuously circled that area from around 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
A woman who didn’t want her named used because she is a retired State Police officer said colleagues told her Matt and Sweat were spotted overnight not far from her home on Johnson Road, where a helicopter had circled for hours.
“They were pretty sure they were right in here because they saw them. That’s what I was told,” she said, adding that her dogs were agitated until 2:30 a.m. by the continual chopper noise overhead and that the animals were exhausted this morning.
“I know they (the fugitives) were in the woods last night, and they were pretty sure they were right in here,” she said, gesturing to the southwest about 6:20 a.m.
Law-enforcement officers were in her yard, she said, “and one was standing right at the door all night with a long gun.”
She said the person did not actively look in the woods “because they had to watch the road,” referring to the deployment of personnel, including Community Emergency Response Team special-operations teams who “were all in sight of each other.”
She said officers each had a sight distance to monitor to ensure Matt and Sweat didn’t slip past.
On Tuesday, the editor and reporters from the Press-Republican provided real time updates on Twitter about the search for the two killers who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York on the evening of June 5.
Editor Lois Clermont tweeted “Retired trooper tells P-R’s Denise Raymo: ‘The special-ops guys were all running in the woods with dogs.'”
UPDATE: The Plattsburgh Press-Republican added this update some time after the story was filed at 7:11 am EDT. The paper offered no indication, however, of the time this update was added:
“But Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill later told the Press-Republican that reports of a sighting overnight ‘proved negative.'”
