A man who somehow allegedly got hold of a gun while handcuffed in a police car and killed the officer transporting him was arrested on Sunday in New Orleans.
Officer Daryle Holloway, 45, who had handcuffed Travis Boys, 33, so he could transport him to the Orleans Parish Prison, was fatally shot allegedly by Boys on Saturday, even though Boys’ hands were handcuffed behind his back.
After Boys reportedly shot Holloway, he jumped out of the car before it smashed into a utility pole.
On Sunday, police glimpsed Boys as he drove a stolen pickup truck. Boys crashed the truck and ran away, but police tracked him to a convenience store and nabbed him when he boarded a public bus. He was still handcuffed, according to New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison. Harrison said, “To my understanding, he got on the bus after spotting the officers. And the officers saw that and then he got off the bus and then was apprehended.”
When examining Holloway’s vehicle, police found two guns along with Holloway’s service weapon, still in Holloway’s holster. Police suspect that Boys used one of the two guns, a.40-caliber Smith & Wesson, to shoot Holloway, a 22-year New Orleans police veteran who had three children.
Police are still baffled as to how Boys obtained the gun he allegedly used to shoot Holloway; they reported that Boys was checked for weapons at a police station before Holloway began his transport. They also stated that Boys will be charged with first-degree murder of a police officer, aggravated escape, and illegal possession of a firearm.
Boys has a long history of attempting to escape from the law; on July 26, 1999 he was accused of escaping from a detective; one month later, on August 27, he was accused of escaping from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center; and in September 2004 he attempted an escape from a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy.
