Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA-4th Dist.) is introducing legislation to bar law-abiding citizens with concealed permits from carrying guns in the unsecured portions of airports.
The legislation—titled the Airport Security Act of 2015—would only allow firearms in unsecured areas to police officers.
According to The Hill, Johnson said:
Airports are the gateway to commerce throughout the world and the front door to the communities they connect for millions of passengers who visit the United States each year. It defies logic that we would allow anyone other than law enforcement officials to carry a loaded gun within an airport. This bill is simple common sense.
Johnson did not mention the unsecured portions of airports are just that—unsecured. Therefore, the gun carried by a law-abiding citizen may be that citizen’s only line of defense in the event of an attack.
Moreover, if implemented, Johnson’s bill already contains language to expand the gun ban beyond unsecured areas of the airport. For example, it would bar law-abiding citizens from having guns for self-defense at “public transportation stops within airports if the gun owner departs the transit station at an airport.”
Johnson is willing to allow law-abiding citizens to exercise their right to bear arms for self-defense as long as the guns are unloaded “and contained in clearly marked, locked cases.” He did not explain how law-abiding citizens are supposed to unlock the cases then access and load their guns in time to defend themselves in the event of an attack.
