Michael Bloomberg’s gun control journalism outlet debuts this week following a June 15 “preview party” in Washington, DC.
The outlet, called “The Trace,” is being promoted as “moderate,” although it will exist under the auspices of Everytown for Gun Safety.
According to the Washington Examiner, precise details on what The Trace will do have not been released. The invitation for the preview party said simply, “Please join us for a preview of The Trace. The journalism startup dedicated to changing the conversation about guns in America.”
The consensus is that The Trace will be used to try to track and present a tally of various kinds of shootings, as Everytown has attempted with study after study. The immediate problem with such an endeavor is that Everytown’s studies are notoriously flawed.
For example, Breitbart News previously reported that Everytown’s list of “100 school shootings” contained shootings that were not school-related, other shootings that had not actually occurred, and others that were simply the accidental discharge of a firearm. In that last category, often an injury had not even transpired, much less a fatality.
The Trace will be “headed by former New Republic story editor James Burnett.”
