Environmentalists’ head-scratching over Hillary Clinton’s refusal to take a hard stand against the Keystone XL pipeline may soon cease, as a Monday Huffington Post report confirms findings in Clinton Cash revealing that the Clintons have bagged millions of dollars in speaking fees from some of the Keystone XL pipeline’s largest investors.
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and TD Bank fully or partially bankrolled eight Hillary Clinton speeches that “put more than $1.6 million in the Democratic candidate’s pocket,” reports the Huffington Post.
And according to Clinton Cash, during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as Sec. of State, Bill Clinton delivered 10 speeches from Nov. 2008 to mid-2011 totaling $1.8 million paid for by one of the largest investors in the Keystone Pipeline, TD Bank, which held a $1.6 billion investment in the Keystone XL pipeline. “TD Bank was also on the hook for $993 million it had loaned to TransCanada,” reports Clinton Cash.
For months, environmental groups have struggled to understand Hillary Clinton’s refusal to condemn the Keystone XL pipeline.
“As secretary of state, Clinton presided over studies that said the pipeline would pose few environmental risks, and she infamously said in 2010 that the administration was ‘inclined’ to support the project. Now she’s avoiding public comment on the issue,” reported Politico last month.
Groups like the Center for Biological Diversity held a protest rally outside a Hillary Clinton $2,700-per-person fundraiser held at the home of Democrat mega donor billionaire Tom Steyer highlighting Clinton’s refusal to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. And Friends of the Earth blasted Hillary Clinton’s opacity surrounding the issue, stating: “The Keystone XL review process was ripe with undue corporate influence and the public deserves to know what role the Secretary of State played in that. Secretary Clinton’s actions continue to undermine the integrity of the Keystone XL decision-making process and the intent of the Freedom of Information Act.”
As Clinton Cash makes clear, speech payments by Keystone XL investor TD Bank to Bill Clinton occurred at critical moments when Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. was making key decisions affecting the pipeline. Moreover, “Canadian corporations with an interest in the project hired several senior aides from Hillary’s presidential campaign to assist them in their efforts.”
For her part, Hillary Clinton has remained silent about the $3.4 million she and her husband made for a combined 18 speeches funded by Keystone XL pipeline banks.
“You won’t get me to talk about Keystone because I have steadily made clear that I’m not going to express an opinion. It is in our process and that’s where it belongs,” Hillary Clinton said in January.
