In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, GOP presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson laid out his plan to combat increasing female unemployment — a way of putting to bed the left’s claim that Republican policies create a war against women.
Carson explains female unemployment increased over the past several years, “because there are so many young women giving birth out of wedlock and when that happens their education stops and the kid is four times more likely to grow up in poverty?”
Breitbart News previously reported that the official female unemployment rate under President Obama is 4.9 percent, higher than it was at a similar point during President George W. Bush’s presidency at 4.5 percent. A record number of women are out of the workforce.
Breitbart News also noted the number of women leaving the workforce is at a record high.
There are 10 million single mothers in the United States living with children younger than age 18 as of 2011. That’s up from 3.4 million in 1970, according to government records.
“Single-mother families in poverty increased for the fourth straight year to 4.1 million, or 41.5 percent, coinciding with longer-term trends of declining marriage and out-of-wedlock births,” reported the Huffington Post in 2013. “Many of these mothers are low income with low education.”
Carson said America must break the cycle that’s been leading to struggling single mothers and in turn, increasing poverty and government dependence.
“What we need to be thinking about is how do we break that cycle,” he said.
“I think the best way is for the community to create daycare opportunities, so she can go back and get her GED, her associates degree, her bachelors, her masters, whatever – become independent and teach that to her children – unless you do that, it keeps snowballing, which it has been for the last few decades.”
