The Social Security Administration projects its trust funds may be depleted by 2033, but this summer the agency is celebrating.
Acting Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin announced the launch of a multi-week celebration of SSA’s upcoming 80th anniversary on August 14.
“Social Security offers hope and protection for millions of people and some of the most vulnerable members of the American public,” Colvin said. “This was President Franklin Roosevelt’s vision in 1935, and the vision has never been clearer, nor has the work of our agency ever been more important than it is today.”
Complete with a website devoted to the agency’s 80th birthday, Colvin said the agency will be offering a menu of activities to mark the occasion, including encouraging people to offer their stories about how Social Security has benefited them and get SSA employs to tell, “Why I Serve.”
Additionally, the agency is planning a number of events, according to SSA, such as highlighting the agency at upcoming baseball games around the country to celebrate “America’s Favorites: Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie & SSA.”
On its celebration website, SSA features a countdown to the official 80th birthday on August 14, as well as a more lengthy message from Colvin which concludes with a “Happy 80th anniversary, Social Security!”
