On May 15, an alleged burglar was shot after hitting a 72-year-old man over the head with a gasoline can.
The incident took place in Harris County, Texas.
According to KHOU.com, 72-year-old Robert Dietz went outside to check his surveillance cameras after noticing they had “gone dark.” Once outside, “he found a man rummaging through a storage trailer he keeps parked under his carport.” The lock on the trailer had been “sheared off.”
When the suspect spotted Dietz, he allegedly threw a gasoline can at him. Dietz said, “It hit me on the side of the head.”
After getting hit with the can, Dietz fired his gun at the suspect, hitting him in the stomach. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Afterward, Dietz said, “Well, I don’t like shooting people. But when he threw that can at me, I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
Investigators say the suspect disabled Dietz’s cameras “before he broke into the trailer.”
