President Obama visited Nike headquarters in Oregon today to promote his Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, in spite of receiving opposition from some of his staunch liberal supporters.
“This deal would be a good thing, so let’s ‘Just Do It,’” Obama said, quoting the famous Nike slogan as many employees in the audience cheered.
“Took a while for you to catch that didn’t you,” Obama said, chuckling at his own joke. “But I thought that was pretty obvious.”
In a mocking tone, Obama dismissed his liberal critics for suggesting that he would do anything to hurt the American economy after he’s worked so hard to improve it.
“I actually think some of my dearest friends are wrong; they’re just wrong,” he said with a flash of exasperation. “They’re just wrong!”
Obama insisted that unlike NAFTA, his proposed trade deal was a plan that was both “smart” and “progressive” that wouldn’t cost American jobs.
Claiming success for not just saving the economy but the auto industry, Obama continued to mock critics who questioned his intentions.
“I spent six and a half years trying to reduce this economy … including rescuing an auto industry that was on it’s back and is now fully recovered,” he said. “So I would not risk any of that if I thought the trade deals would undermine it.”
