On May 2 a group of students at Colorado’s Chapparal High School drew attention to themselves by posing for a prom pic while holding an AR-15 style rifle, a hunting rifle, and a Confederate flag.
According to Denver’s Fox 31, the group in the photo did “nothing illegal, [but] students and parents are questioning their logic.”
One mother, who’s son appeared in the picture, suggested he really did not intend to be in it; “he was surprised that guns were brought out and the Confederate flag was brought out.” But he posed in the photo anyway, and she believes that was a reflection of his “immaturity.”
The mother was also upset that numerous other parents actually liked the photo and supported it.
University of Colorado-Boulder ethnic studies professor Arturo Aldama commented on the photo: “The image is pretty disturbing, especially if they have real assault rifles in their hands. Not to mention, the Confederate flag and its legacy of white supremacy, Klan violence and the Jim Crow South.”
The group in the photo consisted of five girls and three boys. The girls held the guns; the boys held the flag.
