President Obama is currently monitoring the situation in Texas, after two gunmen opened fire at an event hosted by the American Freedom Defense Initiative. Both gunmen were shot and killed by police after they wounded a security guard.
“I can confirm that the President was briefed last night on the situation in Texas,” a White House official confirmed to Breitbart News.
According to reports, the FBI is now searching the Phoenix apartment of the two gunmen involved in the shooting.
Obama is leaving this morning for a trip to New York City, where he will launch “My Brother’s Keeper Alliance,” a new non-profit organization. He will attend a pair of DNC fundraisers before returning to the White House.
It is unclear whether the president will respond to the attacks.
During the National Prayer Breakfast in February, Obama responded to the controversy surrounding the attacks in France surrounding the Charlie Hebdo cartoon portraying the prophet Muhammad.
“If, in fact, we defend the legal right of a person to insult another’s religion, we’re equally obligated to use our free speech to condemn such insults and stand shoulder to shoulder with religious communities, particularly religious minorities, who were targets of such attacks,” he said then.
Obama was criticized after the administration failed to send a representative from the United States to the unity rally hosted in Paris after the attacks.
But during the prayer breakfast, Obama called for all Americans to retain respect for other religions in spite of the right to free speech.
“Just because you have the right to say something doesn’t mean that the rest of us shouldn’t question those who would insult others in the name of free speech,” he said.
