In the middle of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’s unsuccessful push to get Kroger to ban guns, they discovered something they can cheer about — Safeway grocers does prohibit law-abiding citizens from carrying guns in their stores.
Moms Demand claims the ban prohibiting law-abiding citizens from carrying guns for self-defense also applies to Albertson’s, which recently came under the same corporate umbrella as Safeway.
On April 14, Moms Demand Action posted this statement to Facebook:
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America today applauds Safeway and Albertsons, which merged earlier this year, for responding to Moms’ calls and clarifying their company-wide policy prohibiting firearms in their stores. The reinforcement of this policy from the country’s second largest grocery store chain comes as Moms Demand Action releases a new ad and the “World’s Longest Receipt” highlighting the cost of Kroger’s failure to adopt gun sense policies that protect the safety of their customers and employees.
There are some important points that need to be clarified here.
1. Safeway did not ban guns in response to a Moms Demand campaign. Rather, Safeway’s store policy has long prohibited guns. On Tuesday, Breitbart News received an email from Safeway which said: “Our longstanding policy is that firearms are not permitted in our stores – with the exception of law enforcement personnel.”
2. Safeway’s longstanding ban on guns does nothing to highlight the so-called “cost” of Kroger’s refusal to ban guns in their stores. For example, Safeway’s gun ban was in place during the third quarter of 2014, the very quarter in which Kroger’s profits jumped “21 percent” after they refused to ban guns.
The important thing to note is that Kroger and its affiliates — Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, etc. — follow local and state laws that allow law-abiding citizens to carry guns for self-defense. Safeway does not. Instead, Safeway literally prohibits law-abiding citizens from carrying guns in their stores for self-defense.
Moms Demand Action is cheering this news.
