On April 24, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America expressed its “deep disappointment” in Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam (R) for signing into law a bill that allows mothers to carry guns in parks for self-defense.
According to the NRA-ILA, HB 995 allows “a person with a handgun carry permit to carry a firearm in any state, county, or municipal park or other recreation area.” It also removes “provisions allowing local governments to prohibit carrying in parks by resolution or ordinance.”
Criminals already carry guns in parks, so HB 995 levels the playing field by ensuring that concealed carry permit holders may have their guns with them to fend off attack. And for mothers, HB 995 means not simply the ability to defend themselves, but their children, as well.
But Moms Demand Action reacted in a way that makes it sound like concealed carry permit holders contribute to “gun violence,” rather than counter it.
Their statement says, in part:
Everytown for Gun Safety and the Tennessee chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America today expressed deep disappointment over Governor Haslam’s decision to sign House Bill 995 into law, legislation that forces all Tennessee towns and cities to allow guns in their parks and recreation areas. HB 995 eliminates local officials’ authority to make public safety decisions aimed at protecting families and children from gun violence.
After stating its disagreement with Haslam, Moms Demand Action cheered the fact that “the gun lobby” failed to secure laws allowing women to carry guns for self-defense on campuses in a handful of states around the country.
