On April 22, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Everytown for Gun Safety attended an Oregon House Rules Committee hearing in support of Senate Bill 941—the same gun control bill being supported by Sandy Hook Promise, the group for whom Tim McGraw is raising money on July 17.
As Breitbart News previously reported, SB 941 will outlaw private gun sales in the state of Oregon by requiring that all sales—whether private or retail—be conducted through a government background check. These checks will add a fee to all sales, ostensibly to cover the background check, and will also broaden the state’s powers to legally confiscate firearms from Oregon residents.
The background check aspect of SB 941 is being pushed in response to the 2012 attack on the Clackamas Town Center, in which two were killed before the gunman took his own life. Supporters also cite the 2012 attack on Sandy Hook Elementary as a justification for expanding background checks. The problem is that the gunmen in both of these examples stole their guns, so no amount of background checks would have stopped the attacks from occurring.
In reality, Moms Demand, Everytown, and Sandy Hook Promise are supporting gun control that will do nothing to stop the very attacks they so hate, but they will succeed in burdening law-abiding citizens and making it more difficult for them to get the guns they need for self-defense.
Nevertheless, Everytown’s Ted Alcorn said:
The data demonstrate that Oregon’s background check system has blocked thousands of gun sales to criminals, but until loopholes are closed, they will continue to arm themselves in the ready online market. Requiring background checks on all gun sales will eliminate this loophole and will save lives.
Alcorn did not mention Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Aaron Ybarra (Seattle Pacific University), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Jared Loughner (Tucson), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), and Naveed Haq (Seattle), all of whom passed background checks for their guns.
