Sen. Marco Rubio suggests that, although he loved President Ronald Reagan, conservatives need to move beyond the famous conservative president’s policies in order to tackle modern problems.
Rubio spoke at a Tax Day event at the Heritage Foundation, where one audience member cited a Wall Street Journal editorial suggesting that his tax plan was a step away from Reagan’s dramatic tax cuts in the 1980s.
“I’m a huge proponent of everything that President Reagan did and I think he was a historic figure, and quite frankly my favorite president certainly of the 20th Century,” Rubio said.
But he argues conservatives need to move beyond the policies of the 1980’s and focus on keeping America globally competitive in the 21st Century.
Rubio said that the 1980’s were a “great time,” joking that it was the last time his favorite NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, were in the Super Bowl.
“I love the 1980s,” he said, “But we’re in the 21st century and I think one of the things that conservatism has always been about is common sense and reform.”
Rubio launched his 2016 presidential campaign on Monday based on the idea that it was time for a new leader to guide America into the 21st century.
“Conservatism at its core, limited government, and free enterprise – it works better in the 21st Century than the 20th even,” he concluded.
