Hillary Clinton supporters are reportedly aiming to raise $2.5 billion for her 2016 presidential bid.
According to a New York Times report, Clinton’s campaign will likely “cost more than any presidential bid waged before,” with her supporters “looking to raise as much as $2.5 billion in a blitz of donations from Democrats who overwhelmingly support her candidacy.”
The Times notes that much the enthusiasm from big-money donors “is tied to the chance to make history by electing a woman president” and “a lack of compelling alternatives in a party trying desperately to hold on to the White House when Republicans control the House and the Senate.”
Clinton has come under fire from the left and the right for her ties to crony capitalism. And she has been called out for her hypocrisy as more details have been revealed about the millions her family’s foundation has received from repressive Middle Eastern regimes. Bill Clinton’s White House was also embroiled in numerous crony capitalism and pay-to-play scandals, including virtually renting out the White House’s Lincoln bedroom to top campaign donors.
Last week, Gary Hart, the former Democratic presidential contender, said Clinton’s billion-dollar campaign “ought to frighten every American”
