NRA’s Wayne LaPierre: ‘No One Should Be Forced To Face Evil With Bare Hands’

On Saturday, NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre delivered a speech at the NRA’s annual convention in which he rejected the political, para-political, and media-based efforts to cripple the exercise of Second Amendment rights, saying, “No one should be forced to face evil with bare hands.”

This statement reflected the NRA’s contention that the haphazard concealed carry laws around the country — varying from state to state — often leave law-abiding citizens in a place where they cannot defend themselves.

Looking out at row after row full of NRA members, LaPierre said, “We are the Americans that grew up learning that a young George Washington could chop down a cherry tree but he could never tell a lie.” He stressed the importance of honesty and truth in America’s founding and history, pointing to the phrase in the Declaration of Independence which reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.”

He later paused and said, “Among the political class and the media class in this country, truth is no loner self-evident. They wake up every day to lie and spin” and create “a fabric of untruth.”

At jeopardy in this rejection of truth is the destruction of the Second Amendment and the jettisoning of the rights it protects. LaPierre expounded on how these rights are too precious and the Second Amendment too integral to freedom to simply look the other way.

He expressed his abhorrence of efforts current efforts to limit our ability to bear arms with which “to protect ourselves, to protect our families, our communities, and our nation,” saying, “no one should be forced to face evil with bare hands.”

LaPierre waited for the applause to stop then said, “No politician has the right to tell us that we don’t have the right to protect ourselves.”

On February 12, Breitbart News reported that Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the “Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.” This act would mandate that every state with concealed carry honor the permits and licenses from other states with carry permits. While this will not make carry laws uniform from state to state, it will make it against the law to bar a concealed permit holder from carrying his or her gun in a given state.
