On April 11 Breitbart News talked with GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump about guns and gun rights.
When asked why it is important to defend the Second Amendment, Trump said:
It is so important that we maintain the Second Amendment and that we maintain it strongly. And one of the main reasons is because the good people, the upstanding people, follow laws and norms but the bad ones don’t. So if the Second Amendment weren’t there to protect our rights and someone tampered with them, the good people would be affected but the bad people wouldn’t care–they couldn’t care less.
It is absolutely imperative that we maintain the Second Amendment in its strongest form.
When we asked Trump if he might explain the benefit of being armed, whether he sees a difference between people who can be armed and who cannot, he responded:
You look at our country, and you look at certain areas like Chicago, and New York, and various other places, the areas with the most restrictive gun laws are the ones with the most crime. It’s a very interesting phenomenon. Chicago probably has the most restrictive gun laws in the United States and they have massive amounts of shootings and killings.
It just seems that when you look at what’s going on, the areas that are most heavily restricted have the most crime. This is something people should notice and look at very strongly.
We asked Trump how he responds to people for whom gun control in the US is the solution to terror attacks overseas, as in Paris and Copenhagen, he explained:
Paris has virtually the most restrictive laws that exist anywhere, and you look at the slaughter at Charlie Hebdo, and that’s what it was–it was a slaughter in which the people never had a chance. And I made the statement then that if people had guns in that room the outcome would have been a hell-of-a-lot better than it ended up being, where they were just slaughtered at will.
Many people agreed with what I said and some people disagreed. But you have to understand the bad ones had weapons and the good ones did not and were absolutely unable to defend themselves.
On January 8 Breitbart News reported Trump said the Paris attack proved, “When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.”
