When Hillary Clinton found out about Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, she may bloodied him by smacking him over the head with a book, according Kate Brower’s new book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.
According to the New York Post, the book reveals “during the height of President Clinton’s Monica Lewinsky scandal, a White House maid entered the bedroom to clean and was shocked to find the president and first lady’s bed covered” with Bill Clinton’s blood.
At the time, Bill Clinton said that he “hurt himself running into the bathroom door in the middle of the night,” but one White House worker told Brower that “we’re pretty sure [Hillary Clinton] clocked him with a book.” There were reportedly “at least 20 books on the bedside table for his betrayed wife to choose from… including the Bible.”
The Clintons had their share of spats, and White House staffers believe she may have even thrown a lamp at him during one altercation after bellowing “goddamn bastard!”
Hillary may have been one of the last people to find out about Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky–the book reveals that the White House staff reportedly knew about Clinton’s indiscretions with Lewinsky as early as 1995 (Matt Drudge broke the Lewinsky scandal in 1998). After the scandal broke, according to Brower, “for three or four months in 1998… the president slept on a sofa in a private study attached to their bedroom on the second floor. Most of the women on the residence staff thought he got what he deserved.”
